7th post- Taylor & Feminism

Hey babes it’s Em! for this post i’m going to be talking about Taylor Swift lyrics that I think relate to the topic of feminism, a topic Taylor is very passionate about.

“I want to wear his initial on a chain round my neck, chain round my neck not because he owns me but cause he really knows me”  Men who take control of a relationship like that using gifts as a way of showing other people they “own” a women) are most likely narcissistic or/and abusive and Taylor is just bringing that to the forefront and shouting out her current boyfriend for not being like that. Lyrics from Call It What You Want
“The girls that you’ve run dry have tired eyes cause you burned them out” Women supporting women-we love to see it well hear it in this case, especially when it relates to trauma *cough cough John Mayer*. Lyrics from Dear John

“August slipped away like a bottle of wine cause you were never mine”  A women knows that falling in love with this guy is wrong because he’s cheating on someone with her, knows he won’t stay with her and fully accepts that fact no matter how much it hurts her to admit it. Finally a fictional world that’s more realistic where the women in these situations are kind and sensible.  Lyrics from August

The song The Last Great American Dynasty, Is the story of Rebekah Harkness, a famous socialite and a woman thought of by the people around her as “the maddest woman this town has ever seen” Taylor contradicts this assumption in the verses of the song by making us realize, Rebekah wasn't a mad, crazy woman at all She was a free woman finally living her life the way she wanted after her hausband’s death, she didn't follow societal norms, basically she just didn't give a fuck anymore or as Taylor likes to say "she had a marvelous time ruining everything". Lyrics from The Last Great American Dynasty

“Push from the precipice climbed right back up the cliff long story short I survived to me this line in the song Long Story Short proves female independence and the fact that women can do things without needing men's help or validation, I think of this line as being a show of Taylor maturing over the years considering the fact that the first two times She says the words “pushed from the precipice” the line ends with “clung to the nearest lips, long story short it was the wrong guy” And I'm thinking this line ends differently because she finds a strength within herself to go at the tough things alone.  Lyrics from Long Story Short

Girl at Home”-the whole song, that’s it. You might be going “Em seriously, the whole thing?” yeah seriously THE WHOLE THING! this song is a feminist anthem about a guy who hit on Taylor when they both knew he had a girlfriend and Taylor letting him know how she felt about that, spoiler alert: she wasn’t happy. My favorite lines from this song-”I just want to make sure you understand perfectly you're the kind of man who makes me sad, while she waits up,You chase down the newest thing and take four granted what you have

“Call a cab my number you're about to lose your girl, call a cab my number let's consider this lesson learned”

Well, that’s it for now fellow swifties and other amazing people! Thanks to Uma and Jess for helping me out with this post and giving me some ideas. Check out their blogs too!
